When it comes to our skin we have to accept that how we will age will depend a lot on inherited factors, but that doesn’t mean our appearance is completely mapped out for us.
Starting a good cleansing and moisturising regime at an early age will help keep our skin soft and plump, and will also help avoid many blemishes, but once our skin starts showing signs of ageing, what can we do then?
With the change of season and fast approach of the warmer months, Olay Skincare Scientist, David Khoo, has answered some frequently asked questions and shared tips and tricks to help achieve beautiful skin this summer.
What causes skin to age?
“There are two main causes of skin ageing – intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic ageing has to do with our genetic lottery, the way our wrinkles form as our skin ages is inherited from our mothers. However, extrinsic ageing factors accelerate this process. For example, UV damage causes wrinkles, uneven texture and dark spots to form more quickly. In fact, UV damage alone is responsible for up to 80% of how our skin looks as we age”.
How do I get even, glowing skin that can allow me to go makeup-free for summer?
“Make good skincare a twice daily habit and don’t wait till summer is here. Even the best skincare products take time to work (and you should be a little sceptical about products that promise dramatic results in 7 days or less), 2-4 weeks is a reasonable time to expect to see results”.
“Introducing an exfoliating cleanser into your routine will help remove dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin. Look for a gentle cleanser, such as the Olay Regenerist Luminous Brightening Cleanser that won’t strip your skin and couple it with a moisturiser that contains Niacinamide and NAG (n-acetyl glucosamine) to nourish your skin and reduce hyperpigmentation for a more even complexion. Layer a good sunscreen over this, even during the cooler months, and your skin will be at its peak for the summer”.
How can I ensure my skincare is working for me?
“A sound regimen starts with cleansing, to prepare the skin to absorb nourishment. Then it progresses from the lightest formulations to the heaviest. Moisturisers are best applied last as their thicker formula helps to seal in the ingredients from the lighter formulations”.
“To supercharge the benefits of your skincare regimen, the new Olay Regenerist Miracle Boost Youth Pre-Essence is designed to be the first product you apply after cleansing. It absorbs quickly to jumpstart skin renewal. Studies have shown that the Pre-Esssence is an excellent complement to the Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, increasing the absorption of actives like Niacinamide”.
How do I keep my skin hydrated in the warm weather without my makeup sliding off my face?
“A hydrating skincare product doesn’t have to be greasy and in fact, well-hydrated skin can help makeup adhere better! Skincare ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid are exceptionally hydrating and can be used in a lightweight formula that doesn’t leave a heavy feeling on your skin.”
“The Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting UV Cream SPF30 is formulated with Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and plump skin, while protecting from UVA/UVB rays”.
Do I need to change my skincare routine with the seasons?
“Environmental conditions can affect the way your skin behaves and so it’s important to adapt your routine with each new season, just as you would with your clothing or diet. SPF protection is important year round, while summer calls for lighter formulations, ie. switching from a cream to a lotion and vice versa in winter”.
