Alone in a Crowd

To be ‘alone in a crowd’ does not mean to be ‘lonely’, nor does it mean ‘to be lost’, it means to ‘stand out in a crowd’. But if the words of Toronto-born, Sydney resident, Giuseppe Santamaria, are anything to go by, standing out in a crowd may be doing a full turn-around.

“Easy Living – One of my favourite things about living in Sydney is the work-life balance. Sydneysiders have the persistence and hardworking mentality of residents of a metropolitan city, yet display the ease and carefree attitude of inhabitants of a small village in the Mediterranean.

“The latter used to dictate the way the average man in Sydney dressed – singlet and shorts – everyday. Of course, I’m guilty of it myself, but if fashion week is anything to go by, the tide is turning…” – Giuseppe Santamaria.b

Photographer, art director and fashion enthusiast, Giuseppe Santamaria has been photographing stylish men and women for many years and believes there is more than one way to be a man, something he thinks many young men grapple with. While his photography captures men across age demographics, he believes that when men are young they are experimenting with style… “But by 35, you think you have it and you want to share it with others.”

From the Men in this Town series comes Giuseppe Santamaria’s third book, Alone in a Crowd, which once again turns the spotlight on men’s fashion in cities around the world – including Melbourne, Tokyo, London, Paris, Florence, Madrid, New York, Sydney, and Toronto.

Some shots capture menswear enthusiasts outside the fashion week shows in respective cities; others celebrate the everyday style of men – on the streets, at work and at play. This collection – which includes contemporary urban looks, traditional sartorial style and everything in between – spans the author’s travels from 2014 to 2016.

Alone in a Crowd is a global pictorial adventure that captures the relationship of place, personality and fashion.
